An impressive run of T5, T11, T10, T9 from the Genesis Invitational to The Players suggested the breakthrough should have happened by now.
There have been a few signs of impatience, but sandwiching that weekend off in Dallas with a share of fourth at the RBC Heritage and a gritty tied 23 at the USPGA shows he is managing to keep a lid on things.
Fitzy also boasts impressive form here. He was the only man to break 70 in the final round last year when conditions got really difficult – his closing 68 lifted him to third, and the tougher the better this week.
Long shot: Charlie Hoffman – 50-1
Only finished outside the top twenty once in his last eight starts, a run that includes a runner-up finish in the Texas Open, and third in the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth on Sunday.
If the Memorial was being played in the Lone Star state, instead of Ohio, he would be roughly half his current odds!
His previous efforts in Jack’s tournament do not inspire much confidence, with his only top twenty finish coming seven years ago. But he did claim a share of seventh when Muirfield Village also hosted the Workday Championship last July.
As long as his recent run hasn’t taken too much out of him, he should be knocking on the door again this weekend.
